The Visions of George Stavrinos Exhibition
I am constantly seeking opportunities to visit art shows of all kinds to glean all that I can standing before an original work. Amazingly, I also get a vibe about the times and culture I was never actually a part of. The style of the artist becomes an anthem for that moment in time. George Stavrinos is a fine example of the 70’s and 80’s mode and all the luxury it entails, as well as one of the most able draftsmen ever to wield a pencil.
The show at the Society of Illustrators through October 19th “The Visions of George Stavrinos” showcased over 100 illustrations in addition to a glance at the artists process.
I very much enjoyed seeing the transition from photo reference, rough sketches, and tracing paper adjustments to the final work. You can see the thought process the artist goes through to capture the fantasy, the lifestyle and times of the people and clothes.
Clearly I wasn’t the only one fascinated by the collection and technique.
I met and spoke with so many interesting and talented people of all kinds.
Times and fashion illustration have changed, but George Stavrinos is definitely still a significant influence for today’s artists.
