Believe it or not, I’ve never actually owned a Moleskin sketchbook. I am always looking for new kinds, with different paper, covers etc. I have all sorts but I’ve never had a Moleskin. I recently got one after reading and Urban Sketchers NYC blog post. I’ve always loved the way they look, feel and how the paper takes all kinds of media. I even have a Pinterest board dedicated to sketchbook sketching.
A few weeks ago I got one and it’s been swimming around the studio while I work on a painting series at my easel. This weekend however, in the throws of “serious painting” I had a sudden urge to play. I opened my Moleskin and my Pinterest account to doodle around a bit.
I Started with my “Hamster Lovein” board. As a child I had hamsters all the time, they are so adorable and just make me giddy with laughter to swipe through my board. See, I’m already playing!
I started with a Western Pygmy Possum and my acrylic paints. The ideas was to paint quickly with a large flat brush and to reduce the forms to simple shapes with spirited strokes. Woooah, wait, now I’m getting awfully serious!
Next I did a baby elephant from my “Elephant in a Bell Jar” board. I’ve always wanted a pet elephant that fit in a bell jar. I see myself as that little girl leading around her elephant.
I’ve even drawn myself with a pet elephant in some other sketchbook long ago.
How do you use your Pinterest boards to get Pinspired? I’ve said it several times in this blog, “Serious work is born from serious play”. Share your ideas and links in the comments, I’d love see how you play.
