Motocross Wedding Style
On the other side of the family tree, my Motocross cousins grew up on bikes, tearing it up and competing to win in all categories of extreme sports Their passion for what they do has become a global touring brand known as the “ Smagical Bros.“. You may have seen them on America’s Got Talent in 2011, You may have read about Phil Smage in the Guinness Book of World Records, or you may have taken your family to see Captain America in the “Marvel Universe LIVE” show currently touring the US. A whole lot more likely, you have read about them in one of my past posts about Motocross trending in fashion design. When I wrote that post I was excited that a SHE talent of the motocross world was about to join our family. Sarah Whitmore is a known bad-ass in the motocross world, also known as Madame Hydra in the “Marvel Universe LIVE” Tour. Together, Phil and Sarah hold the (unofficial) world record for the most nose wheelie kisses. This record remains uncontested.
They got married this past summer in what was a uniquely styled wedding that was so wick’dousem, it actually made ME cry. They had just bought a property they will be turning into “Smagical Retreat” in northern Wisconsin. It is a gorgeous Frank Lloyd Wright, inspired place with buildings that incorporate the landscape into the structure. I got to walk the grounds before the ceremony and I’d say it’s as if the Ewoks and Hobbits got together to create a magical village in a wooded valley equipped with a dirt bike track. It’s was a perfect setting.
It was a beautiful day with the sun shining through the trees and a perfect mid 70 degrees. The blue lagoon you see in the above photo was dyed “Smagical Blue” for the occasion. As you might guess “Smagical Blue” was the color of the day.
Sarah’s greatdane Hansel was sporting a GoPro to get KillerShots from a dog’s eye view. He is such a sweet horse of a dog and so handsome in “Smagical Blue”. Certainly there will be an O.P.I. offering of the color soon enough but blue isn’t the only signature that made it into the wedding decor, or for that matter, the only pet to make an appearance.
For as long as I can remember, there were just as many goats as there were us cousins running around in the yard. The Smagical logo is Wilbur, he goes everywhere even though he has passed on to legend. I even have a ski-cap with him on it because Wilbur Wear is a thing. Notice the bike handle grip for a bouquet holder? Brilliant.
Sarah’s family is a motorcycle clan as well, her dad is every part her coach and manager. The way he “walked” her down the isle is absolutely touching. They had a custom made side car built for a dirt bike. The side car was designed and welded by Bob Swatek at R.C. Portable Welding and Fabrication, it was painted “Smagical Blue”.
I never did find out who’s dress she was wearing but the design of it has all my favorite things. The bodice is longer than most corseting bridal gowns which elongates the torso beautifully. The bodice has asymmetrical pleating that wraps her up to perfection while the skirt is bustled in back with voluminous deep fold pleated layers of tulle. A gorgeous silhouette in the sun.
They personalized their vows which was hilariously endearing but I don’t have them transcribed to share with you. These next three images will tell just how sweet and how much fun these two have together in everything that they do.
Awesome touches of style didn’t stop there, the bridesmaids carried bike gears instead of flowers…
…Boys will be boys; the groomsmen all paid tribute with a simultaneous nose wheelie.
Then it was time for the very first nose wheelie kiss as husband and wife. Notice she changed into a bike friendly wedding dress for this trick.
Then she changed back into her gown for the last game of the night “Backwards Bike”, before dinner and dancing. Most motocross bikes don’t have reverse, they installed it special for this event. The game is to go in reverse for as long as possible without bailing. It looks easy but it’s not, Sarah makes it look easy and glamorous. She’s like Rosie Riveter putting on her lipstick before her welding mask. I just love that kind of je ne sais quoi.
By mid evening she was an elegantly mud dipped bride. I think it’s the coolest thing to take a beautiful dress and trash it in the most tasteful way.
Since the wedding the two love birds were seriously injured in separate accidents that happened nearly at the same time. Phil says “you gotta pay to play” but this one makes him grateful for his health. They are both currently on the road to recovery but every positive vibe and well wish helps. Please send some good mojo in the comments below and follow their progress on Instagram at Phil and Sarah. They are definitely one of the coolest style couples on my list.
